“Improvements in video compression not only led to broader and more enjoyable entertainment experiences but in recent years to video applications becoming pervasive in all facets of life. Video compression is the basis for communication, telemedicine and the Internet of Things – autonomous cars, smart surveillance cameras and industrial robots use video to sense and analyse their environments to fulfil automated tasks. Emerging immersive applications such as virtual reality and augmented reality create the need to extend compression methods to richer media formats such as volumetric video.”

Marta Karczewicz received her MSc and PhD degrees from the Tampere University of Technology, Finland. She has worked on nearly every building block of video codecs, and holds over 800 US and 250 European patents. Marta was one of three recipients of the Qualcomm IP Excellence Award in 2012 and was nominated as one of three finalists for the 2019 European Inventor Award in the prestigious “Lifetime Achievement” category. She is an author of nine papers in special issues of the IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems for Video Technology journal, covering all three of the latest video standards: H.264/AVC, HEVC and VVC. Marta currently leads a team in the multimedia R&D unit at Qualcomm, which focuses on making breakthroughs as video moves into more categories such as remote education, telemedicine and XR.
