Energy Technology Analyst, International Energy Agency (IEA)

“Technological change is at the heart of energy transitions. Innovation is the motor that drives a virtuous process: it makes renewables, batteries and energy efficiency cheaper and more attractive, thereby increasing uptake and stimulating more research and investment in new ideas. Good government policy is needed to accelerate all parts of this cycle.”

Simon Bennett is responsible for new technology analysis in the International Energy Agency’s annual World Energy Investment and World Energy Outlook reports. At the IEA, he has spearheaded new work streams related to innovation tracking, including patent analysis and start-up trends, as well as hydrogen policy. Originally from the UK, he has dedicated himself to clean energy innovation policy since his PhD studies at Imperial College and work at the European Commission’s Directorate General for Energy. In 2022, he co-hosted the Innovation Frontlines podcast.
