Stefan Vilsmeier

Stefan Vilsmeier

Birthplace: Munich, Germany
Founder, President and CEO, Brainlab

“At Brainlab, innovation is in our DNA and has defined the company from the start. We question the status quo every day with the overarching goal of improving treatments for patients.”

At the age of 15, Stefan Vilsmeier received his first computer: a Commodore 64. By 16, he had written a book on 3D software, which sold 50 000 copies in its first year. Through the publication of his book, he secured an invitation for Stefan to join a computer project at the University of Vienna. During the course of that project, he was introduced to computed- and magnetic resonance tomography. He wanted to leverage the precision depicted in those images to optimise surgery. After just 20 days as a computer science student at the Technical University of Munich, he dropped out and founded Brainlab to focus on digitising surgery.
